The Gemini Blue Bulletin

"A Weekly Communication from Teachers to Families for School Success"

September 27, 2010

Math – Ms. Burgess:  Students in the Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue classes are starting a unit this week on Decimals. The Orange class is working on Integers and Absolute Value. All students will receive mid-term progress reports on Friday, which include a current grade range for math class. This is meant to give students and parents an idea of where students are at this point. The second Math Learning Log of the term is due tomorrow, 9/28. Have a marvelous week! :)

Geography – Mr. Wolf:  It was a pleasure to meet all of the parents that attended Open House. This week we have a fun activity on latitude and longitude and continue using the global grid. We will be learning about map projections and how there are a variety of ways to show locations. Last Friday was our autumnal equinox. Be sure to tell your family what autumnal equinox means and have a great Autumn!

English – Mrs. Rezendes:  This week we will begin reading a novel, So Far From the Bamboo Grove. It is a riveting, true-story of a family's escape from North Korea at the end of WWII. Students will continue to use their active reading strategies as we read the novel. We will start literature circles with the novel next week.

Strategic Reading – Mrs. Jitiam: Students will be presenting their small-group Seedfolks projects in class on Thursday, September 29th. Students should continue to read and log time and pages nightly. The third completed reading log for term 1 is due on Friday, September 30th.

Science – Mrs. Yule:  We are preparing for our first major test in Science.  Next week on Tuesday, students will be assessed on their knowledge of matter.  We will be reviewing this week, and a study guide will be provided.  By the end of next week, I will send home “grade to date” messages after I have graded the tests.

Important Dates:

Wednesday September 28 – In-Service; Students dismissed at 12 pm

Friday September 30 – Midterm, Term 1

Have a pleasant and productive week!
