The Gemini Blue Bulletin

"A Weekly Communication from Teachers to Families for School Success"

January 31, 2012

Math – Ms. Burgess: The Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue classes are working with Fractions and Mixed Numbers. The Orange class is finishing chapter 6, and will take a test on Friday. The first Math Learning Log of the term is due tomorrow, 2/1. Have a wonderful week! :)

Reading – Mrs. Jitiam: Students have begun their persuasive essay/research paper. We are in computer lab Tues. Wed. and Thurs. of this week to research and begin the writing of this essay. First drafts should be completed on Google.docs by February 8th. Final drafts are due Monday February 13th.

Geography – Mr. Wolf:  Students are continuing to learn about the effects of oil from the Middle East on the world. We have also been looking at CNN Student News to explore alternative forms of energy in the Middle East and global community. Have a great week!

English – Mrs. Rezendes:  We are continuing to read and analyze The Misfits. We will have another MCAS-style quiz on the book on Thursday.

Science – Mrs. Yule:  We are beginning our next (and longest) unit - Life Science. All of third quarter and part of fourth will examine living things, how they are classified, cells, plants, and ecosystems. There will be labs involving microscopic organisms, and outside opportunities to observe the interactions between living things in the various communities that surround our school. Since this is an entirely new unit, it's a wonderful time for students to set up their notebooks, and keep on top of the materials that will be handed out. Because multiple text books are used, it is really easiest if students utilize the online text. As a reminder, if you go to the phsuccessnet.com site, the user name is g1lastname, and the password is gemini.

Team News:

We are looking forward to the field trip to Silver Lake High School on February 27th to see Eureka! Please make sure that your child has brought a signed permission slip and the $12 payment to his or her homeroom teacher. Thank you to the many parents who volunteered to chaperone this field trip. We had more volunteers than we have tickets, so we chose chaperones on a first-come, first-served basis. Ms. Burgess sent letters home last Friday with students letting parents know whether we need them to join us or not. Thanks for the support!
